Kasaragod (Ker), Jun 18 : Thieves decamped with 32 kg gold ornaments worth around Rs 4.50 crore from the North Malabar Gramin Bank (NMGB) in the district today, a senior bank official said.

After gaining entry by removing a rear window frame of the bank at Periye Bazar, about 22 km from here, they broke open one of the safes and decamped with gold ornaments and Rs 6.75 lakh cash, NMGB General Manager Itty Thomas told Zeack.

The burglars are believed to have used an iron bar to break open the safe, he said.

A hotelier in the ground floor informed police about the incident but the burglars had fled the scene before the police arrived, DySP Habeeb Rahman said.

Thomas said the bank had not appointed any night watchman in small branch offices.
