Chennai,Jun 18 : A person of Algerian origin wanted in connection with a 1992 blast at Algeria airport and against whom an Interpol red corner notice was pending was arrested at the airport here last night.
According to highly-placed officials in the state police, Saleem Abbasi (42) was taken into custody after he arrived here en route to Bangalore for a business conference from Malaysia.
He was arrested by Immigration authorities following the Interpol red corner notice, officials said.
Intelligence Bureau sources said Abbasi was of Algerian origin who had acquired a Qatari passport, adding he was wanted in connection with the August 1992 bombing of the Houari Boumediene Airport in Algeria which killed nine persons and injured around 100.
Asked whether he would be deported to Algeria immediately, the sources said "the due process of law would be followed," but declined to elaborate. Ze
